The old guide had for a long time held sway in his little village, and all the tourists who passed through it vied with each other to be conducted by him. But now all is changed, for he is no longer so surefooted and has a competitor in a villager who is young and who is preferred by all. The old guide hates his rival. The latter, however, does not reciprocate this feeling, and on the contrary wishes to be friendly, because he is in love with the daughter of the old man, but it is all in vain.
