In 1988, 184,000 Iraqi Kurds were abducted from their towns and villages by the Iraqi government as part of a genocidal campaign. After the liberation of Kurdistan in 1991, Hana is assigned by the United Nations to investigate the fate of the missing. She encounters vast numbers of unclaimed identity cards and personal documents, and among them discovers the tragic truth of her own fate.
