Director Luigi Di Gianni returns to film in San Cataldo, the town where he made “Nascita e morte nel Meridione” (Birth and Death in the South) in 1959. Lucania persa alternates between testimonies from San Cataldo residents, archive footage (excerpts from the 1959 documentary and photographic material from the director's archive) and commentary by Di Gianni himself.
