Around the world, many people will wonder what's happening in the images I'm sharing with you now. It's a rather old tradition from the province of Canas: the Ritual Battles of Toqto and Chiaraje. Every year in December and January, groups of farmers from communities like Langui, Layo, Cheqa, Qewe, and Descanso engage in deadly combat, evoking, as many of the participants recount, the battles fought by Tupac Amaru II at the end of the 18th century, battles waged to achieve our emancipation.
