Director

Teófilo Hinostroza (1914-1991) was born in Colcabamba (Huancavelica), but spent most of his life in Huancayo, the capital of the Junín department. He began his career in photography at the age of 15, as an apprentice to the Huancayo photographer Fortunato Pecho. At 23 (1937), he opened his own studio, Foto El Arte, where he worked for 48 years, until 1985, a few years before his death. His studio was not only the most popular photography studio in the area, but also a cultural center frequented by local and national figures, including his friend, the writer José María Arguedas. He produced documentaries between the 1940s and 1950s, one of his works being “Tarpuy.”
