Pilar Roca

Director

Pilar Roca began her filmmaking career during the Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces, producing a series of short documentaries for SINAMOS. From that point on, she developed her career in collaboration with her partner, Federico García Hurtado. Following the typical gendered division of labor in Latin American political cinema, she worked as a researcher and producer for the films directed by her partner (Seguí 2019). This cinema, produced in a precarious and militant manner, was practiced as a way of life, where the personal, professional, and political dimensions merged. The Roca-García tandem produced fundamental films of Peruvian cinema such as Kuntur Wachana (1977) and Tupac Amaru (1984). In a second phase of her life, she decided to stop producing films for García and focused on her work as a researcher and essayist. She also ventured, later in life, into directing documentaries. Roca has published several essays, some of which are part of the research for the films, and others are writings that reflect his political thinking, his critical view of the imposed colonial order, and his denunciation of corruption.
